Tamid 26 for kids: The Tunnel and the Lottery

The Polite Door
A priest walked through a hidden passage under the Temple to reach the immersion room, with lamps lighting his way. If the bathroom door was locked he knew someone was inside and waited; if it was open, he knew it was empty. This showed honor and privacy.

Finding Three Watches
Abaye said a verse about Moses, Aaron, and his sons proves priests must keep watch in the Temple. The Sages explained the verse really means Aaron watched in one spot and his sons watched in two more spots, making three. Rav Ashi found the number three hidden in three watch-words at the end of the verse.

One Watchman, Two Gates
The Gemara asked why only one watchman covered the Chamber of the Hearth, since it had two gates, one to the rampart and one to the courtyard. Rabbi Yehuda noted one gate had a small peek-hole too. Abaye answered that since the two gates faced each other, one watchman could easily look both ways.
